An Insight into Different Types of Waterproofing Methods

Waterproofing of your construction is crucial because it creates an impenetrable shield against water over the foundation, basement, roof, basement, and external & internal walls. Today, there are many specialised waterproofing solutions available which follow different waterproofing methods. Some of the most prevalent waterproofing methods used in building construction are listed below.

Waterproofing Using Cement

It is one of the easiest waterproofing methods as the materials required for waterproofing are readily available from local suppliers. Besides, materials are also simple to mix and apply in damp locations such as toilets. Because it is not susceptible to weathering and sunshine, this technique does not go through the contraction and expansion stage. This method is followed for waterproof deck coatings in bridges, sewage, water treatment plants, dams, and tunnels.

Waterproofing Using Liquid Membrane

In this method, a primer coat is applied first, followed by a couple of topcoats applied with the help of a roller, spray, or trowel. This provides more flexibility than cementitious waterproofing. When the liquid cures, it transforms into a rubbery coating on your wall. The elongation capabilities of this technique will be comparatively higher. However, the type of polymer used by the manufacturer to apply liquid waterproofing will determine this.

Waterproofing Through Bituminous Coating

Bituminous coating is another method for waterproofing a building structure. Flexibility and water-resistance are provided by the polymer grade and reinforced fibre qualities. This procedure is also known as asphalt coating, and it works well for concrete foundations. However, when exposed to sunlight, the bitumen-based materials used in this technique of coating may not be adequate. This is owing to the fact that it eventually becomes frail and weak. More flexible materials, such as acrylic or polyurethane-based polymers, can be used to enhance it.

Waterproofing with a Polyurethane Liquid Membrane

The polyurethane liquid membrane is another type of waterproofing; however, it is more expensive. It is mostly employed in flat roof regions and those that are subject to weathering. Despite the fact that this sort of waterproofing is quite flexible, polyurethane is very susceptible to moisture content.

When using this procedure, make sure to check the moisture content of the concrete slab. If you don't, you'll find that the membranes start to de-bond or peel over time.

So, these are some of the many waterproofing types that one can rely on for waterproofing their home.
